Although in this case, I was able to fix the problem by simply restarting the two applications which can be done very quickly. Sometimes VNC or ScreenRecycler gets a bit confused. When it works, ScreenRecycler is pretty magical. The interesting thing about ScreenRecycler is that it allows you to use this remote machine as a monitor and it will show up in your System Preferences under Displays and can be configured using that mechanism just as you would configure an external display. When you connect to your main computer a window will open on the old computer which is displaying information from your main computer. On the old machine run your VNC program using the information from above. This window will contain the information you will need to use to connect from your old machine. On your primary computer, run the ScreenRecycler program and it will open a very small window.

We have another player who's mapping on paper, and digital is faster. I prefer mapping with Illustrator to paper since it's much easier to fix mistakes. I just picked up an iPad, and that'll be a second screen I'll toss the map on so we can hand it around the table. (We don't have enough hardcopies for the whole group.)

I also purchased copies of the 1e books on PDF back when they were available, so when we were creating characters I had that as a reference. My character sheet and notes are all on paper, I just use the laptop to map. In the game, I use Illustrator to map our trip through ToEE. I use a laptop at the table in one game, and I used it to the side when I GMed.
